Coach Anne-Marie Alderson
My personal racing and coaching experience has taught me that every athlete deserves unique coaching to meet their unique goals. Throughout my racing career, I have progressed from a back-to-middle-of-the-pack age group athlete to consistently finishing at the top of my age group and qualifying for Elite Amateur status at specific races. My journey has taught me how to train effectively and race strategically, how to develop mental toughness, and that sometimes the most important lessons come from events we brush off as ‘failures’.
My goal is to not only to improve your athletic performance, but to use sports as a way to teach lessons that go beyond the workout and help you to become an even better version of yourself.
I’ve been a part of the Steel City Endurance family since 2009, when I joined the Steel City Endurance women’s cycling team. Shortly thereafter, I began working one-on-one with Coach Suzanne as she prepared me for my first Ironman triathlon. Over the next few seasons with SCE, I not only became an Ironman, but also qualified 4 times for USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals and consistently ranked among the top 5% of my age group in races.
In 2013, I became certified as a triathlon coach myself and have enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experience with the athletes I coach as I’ve prepared them for a range of goals, from first 5k to Ironman races. As a Steel City Endurance coach, my goal is to create a unique training strategy for each individual athlete that allows for efficient, quality training while maintaining a healthy balance of personal life and athletic pursuits.Anne-Marie Alderson
Since 2003, Anne-Marie has competed in over 30 triathlons ranging from Sprint distance to Ironman, and more running and bike races than she can count! In 2014 and 2015, Anne-Marie took on a new challenge and entered the world of ultra-cycling.
She competed in Race Across America (3,000 miles, Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD) on a 4-woman relay team in 2014, and in 2015, she tackled Race Across the West (860 miles, Oceanside, CA to Durango, CO) on a 2-woman duo team. Participating in multi-day endurance races has provided a new perspective on endurance sports and brought valuable insight and lessons to share with others.
Anne-Marie’s certifications include Triathlon Coach (ITCA), Metabolic Efficiency Training Specialist, Heart Zones, and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. As a coach, Anne-Marie provides not only training plans, but also ongoing feedback, encouragement, and advice and enjoys staying in close communication with her athletes. When designing a training plan, she takes into account one’s personal obligations, available training time, and other physical activities to create a unique training approach. Monitoring an athlete’s workouts via Training Peaks software and staying in close communication allows any adaptations or changes to a training plan to be implemented when necessary. Anne-Marie believes endurance sports take us on a journey that teaches us lessons that extend beyond the running shoes, bike, or pool, and these lessons shape our personalities and make us better versions of ourselves.
In addition to endurance sports coaching, Anne-Marie offers nutrition consultations for metabolic efficiency. Metabolic efficiency entails strategic manipulations and carbohydrate and protein ratios to enable the body to utilize more stored body fat for energy during racing/training instead of depending on external carb sources. Being metabolically efficient can reduce GI distress during races, reduce the amount of calories needed during activity, improve recovery times, and lead to a leaner body composition.

I had the pleasure of working with Anne-Marie for six months to improve my cycling strength. It was a busy time during my PhD and I wasn’t able to motivate myself to ride. Anne-Marie tailored a rigorous training program that also fit my busy schedule. In addition to spinning techniques, I learned how to use my Garmin on rides as well as the Training Peaks software. Anne-Marie also taught me nutrition and the importance of integrating more protein in my diet (rather than eating carb heavy). Anne-Marie is a very strong rider and superb coach. When I first sat down and talked with Anne-Marie halfway through 2013, I just wanted to build up to running a 5k – that’s really all I was hoping for. With AM’s guidance, the miles kept adding up and I ended up running 8 5k’s, three half marathons, my first multi-sport race and finishing my first full marathon in New York City in November 2014. I was stunned that in just over a year, I had learned and done so much. Anne-Marie is patient, well versed on nutrition and sports science and a very experienced athlete herself. Anne-Marie has been the perfect coach for me. She is able to listen to all of my concerns and answer my questions thoroughly. She helps me respect the balance between work, family life, and my competitive goals. She knows when I’m nervous about trying new things (like open water swims and long bike rides) and helps me push myself out of my comfort zone and realize new achievements.
